Summary

“Tintin and the Explorers on the Moon” is the 10th book of the series and presents a surprising background。 In this one, Hergé takes his shot at predicting the first landing on our satellite thirteen years before it actually happened! Oh, yeah。 They always find a way to mysteriously show up on these adventures, and they do it this time once again。 We have the young and confident protagonist, his trusted dog, a drunk but loyal ex-sailor, an intelligent and perfectionist scientist, a nervous and suspicious engineer, and the impersonations of comic relief, in that order。Those are the ones that will have every single thing against them。 Every malfunction, every coincidence, every space phenomenon and every human mistake。 The book contains as many twists and turns as a Formula 1 racetrack。 At the blink of an eye, everything is flipped upside down and the story can go anywhere。It’s also astounding how the writer manages to create hundreds and hundreds of interactions between the same characters throughout his work and always make them interesting。 He has a talent of adding the same ingredients but with a different and exotic spice every time, changing the dish entirely。In the end, the result that we get involves a whole lot of aspects: a little bit of science, suspense, adventure, comedy, drama, and we could go all day… In this mixture, there is something very unique we can discern。 Something we embraced and learned to love。 The chaos。 。。。more

Yazıldığı dönem itibariyle Hedef Ay ve Ay'a Ayak Basıldı'yı oldukça yenilikçi buldum。 Yenilikçi derken elbette ki hikaye değil çizimler。 Yoksa insanlığın ilk kez ayak bastığı Aya bir gazeteci, küfürbaz ve ırkçı bir deniz kaptanı, bir köpek, iki tane birbirinden salak polis götürmezdiniz。Roketin içerisindeyken kulenin "hesaplarımızda bir yanlışlık olmasın?" sorusuna çok güldüm。 Yani NASA'nın böyle birşey dediğini düşünebiliyor musunuz?

All the usual Tintin tropes, but in space。 Lots of words in this one and I swear they seem smaller too。 It was interesting to see how much of space travel they got wrong or chose to ignore。 But a bunch of the flavor was right-ish。 Not sure I was expecting stowaways。 An actual tank rather than a moon rover。 A nuclear powered spacecraft。 Pretty readable though。 3。5 of 5。

Tintin was one of the comic book heroes of my childhood。 I'm going to read my way through the series again as I listen to a radio program about him, and his creator, Hergé。 And I come to book #17, Explorers on the Moon, that picks up right off where book #16 ends with our heroes on their way to the moon。 The cliffhanger is resolved, and Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock, professor Calculus and his assistant, Frank Wolff make their way to the moon。 There are some hiccup along the way, like Thompson, Tintin was one of the comic book heroes of my childhood。 I'm going to read my way through the series again as I listen to a radio program about him, and his creator, Hergé。 And I come to book #17, Explorers on the Moon, that picks up right off where book #16 ends with our heroes on their way to the moon。 The cliffhanger is resolved, and Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock, professor Calculus and his assistant, Frank Wolff make their way to the moon。 There are some hiccup along the way, like Thompson, and Thomson showing up unexpectedly, but they get there years before Neil Armstrong, and co。 They do some research there, but the trip home becomes more hazardous that expected。The magazine version of this story was serialised from October 1952 to December 1953, and then published as a book in 1954。 It is quite interesting to think that in 1953, the year that the serialising of this story was completed, is the same year that saw the premier of the film Cat-Women of the Moon, because even though Hergé doesn't get everything right, he basically made a nonfiction book about a journey to the moon compared to what director Arthur Hilton produced。 I'm not looking past the silliness that one can see in Explorers on the Moon。 There is some of that, but for most parts Hergé does a pretty interesting job at bringing his readers a believable vision of what a trip to the moon could look like。 The fact that Snowy takes the trip with his friends is an interesting touch, because just a few years later, in 1957 Laika became the first animal in Earth orbit。 Snowy got treated much better though。 He even gets his own space suit。 Explores on the Moon is not just interesting because of it's connection to the real history of space exploration, but it is also just a fun comic book。 Quite funny in it's own right, and it has that in common with Cat-Women on the Moon。 It's not quite as funny as Destination Moon, but nearly so。 And as a adventure it doesn't disappoint。 It's got enough twists and turns, and life threatening situations to be quite exciting。 I know I haven't finished the last few books, but I think Hergé probably reached a peak in his career with these two two book adventures, first the treasure hunt, and then the trip to the moon。 In both cases the Tintin formula just works completely。 And it is interesting to think that they belong to different genres, the moon duo is very much a realistic science fiction in form。 The science that is。 The way they get to the moon, and that sort of things。 The rest is of course the usual Tintin humorous adventure that is never completely realistic, but fun just the same。 There is one thing more to say about this book, with it the last of the two book adventures ends。 The rest of the series are a standalone books。 My dog Káta just wants to add that Snowy on the moon in his space suit running, and flying off because of the lack of gravity is the most exciting things she has seen。 Snowy is her favourite character, and she doesn't want anything bad to happen to him。 。。。more

Written long before the actual moon landings, Tintin's adventure on the moon is captivating and masterfully thought out。 The science is believable and the predictions were realistic。 That is apart from the Thompsons' affliction which works for me on a totally different level。My only issue is that the so-called returning villain was a non-event in his first appearance so when he turned up it was anticlimactic。Great stuff! I read this because I am on my way to Brussels and have learned Herge's characters adorn buildings there。 While the story is pretty childish (Herge' was a children's author and my copy was published in the U。S。 by Scholastic) the was some significant physical violence, a self-sacrificing suicide, and wonton drunkenness。 What stands out is Herge's breakthrough (for that time) drawings, using Chinese style perspective, word balloons, and scenic backgrounds。 I read this because I am on my way to Brussels and have learned Herge's characters adorn buildings there。 While the story is pretty childish (Herge' was a children's author and my copy was published in the U。S。 by Scholastic) the was some significant physical violence, a self-sacrificing suicide, and wonton drunkenness。 What stands out is Herge's breakthrough (for that time) drawings, using Chinese style perspective, word balloons, and scenic backgrounds。 。。。more

Explorers on the Moon is the exciting and suspenseful conclusion to the story arc that began in Destination Moon。 Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock, Professor Calculus and his assistant, Engineer Frank Wolff have finally landed on the moon and are prepared to make intriguing explorations and constructive work on its eerily quiet and desolate landscape。 But a host of unexpected surprises pop up, some happenstance and others, downright disastrous。 Foreign powers are still at fiendish play。 A good man Explorers on the Moon is the exciting and suspenseful conclusion to the story arc that began in Destination Moon。 Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock, Professor Calculus and his assistant, Engineer Frank Wolff have finally landed on the moon and are prepared to make intriguing explorations and constructive work on its eerily quiet and desolate landscape。 But a host of unexpected surprises pop up, some happenstance and others, downright disastrous。 Foreign powers are still at fiendish play。 A good man will be haunted by his seedy past and will take a decision that will either save the day or end with calamity。 Returning to planet Earth safe and sound seems like a tenuous proposition for our explorers and the book leaves you at the edge of your seat till the very end。Lord, but I still have a sense of childlike awe when I read this book。 Shorn of any fantastical elements like aliens or space monsters, Hergé has given us yet another scientific masterpiece。 As mentioned in Destination Moon, he wrote this book at a time when manned space travel was still just an idea that hadn’t been executed yet。 The author/artist shows us the power of research as he gave Tintin and his merry band an adventure beyond their wildest dreams。 The beauty and everlasting appeal of Hergé's imagination is that the technical monologues are balanced out beautifully with intrigue and splashes of humour。 You never get bored。 You just can’t。A sozzled Captain Haddock almost turning into a satellite for a dwarf planet is something that terrifies but also tickles me to this day。My childhood is now a hazy memory but am sure that when my dad first introduced me to Tintin and I devoured Explorers of the Moon, I must have cherished a strong wish to be on that beautiful red and white chequered rocket as it raced against pre-conceived notions and dastardly villains to land on the moon and return in one piece to earth。Yet another tremendous adventure from the mind of Hergé 。 。。。more

Having left Tintin and his fellow crew-members blacked-out aboard the moon rocket, Explorers On The Moon picks up where the final cliff-hanging page of Destination Moon left off。Without giving anything away, suffice it to say that Hergé’s lunar exploration adventure doesn’t disappoint。 With the hindsight we now have, parts appear by turn cutely fantastical or strikingly ‘prophetic’, given that Hergé was dreaming this all up on terra firma, prior to the actual moon-landings。As usual there’s actio Having left Tintin and his fellow crew-members blacked-out aboard the moon rocket, Explorers On The Moon picks up where the final cliff-hanging page of Destination Moon left off。Without giving anything away, suffice it to say that Hergé’s lunar exploration adventure doesn’t disappoint。 With the hindsight we now have, parts appear by turn cutely fantastical or strikingly ‘prophetic’, given that Hergé was dreaming this all up on terra firma, prior to the actual moon-landings。As usual there’s action, adventure, excitement and comedy。 As well as the expected buffoonery of, for example, Capt。 Haddock, there’s also villainy, heroism and tragedy, making this particular episode one of the darker Tintin stories, but all served up with that endearing boy-scout old-school adventurousness that makes all of these stories such enduring classics。Wonderful! 。。。more

A minor step down from Destination Moon。 The addition of the espionage and skulduggery elements didn't work, in my opinion, and took away from the sense of wonder and adventure this entry has。 Still has its side-splitting moments though - the Thompson Twins and their "aspirin" recurrence, for example。 A minor step down from Destination Moon。 The addition of the espionage and skulduggery elements didn't work, in my opinion, and took away from the sense of wonder and adventure this entry has。 Still has its side-splitting moments though - the Thompson Twins and their "aspirin" recurrence, for example。 。。。more

NEW REVIEW TO COME UPON REREAD5 stars & 5/10 hearts。 Again, the humour in this book is great。 So is the suspense and adventure! Tintin, Haddock, and the Dupondt brothers shine as their true selves in this book。 Tournesol has to be able to hear for things to work out, so his lost deafness keeps him from being as hilarious as usual, but he still manages to be very funny。 The serious thread of doing right is a very nice addition and always leaves me pondering…Contains drinking, smoking, & swearing

I was surprised, but I guess space plots always freak me out。 I appreciated some of the things Farr pointed out in The Complete Tintin about how Herge used incorrect science about the moon for some of the illustrations and plots in the book, but I don't think it detracts from the story。 It was that kind of insight I was hoping reading the books in tandem would offer。 。。。more
